For artists

A NEW ARTIST AND FAN ECONOMY,
BUILT AROUND TIME.

musen is testing a new way to connect listeners, artists and royalties through something they already share: time.

As people listen, royalties can be attributed in real time. Listeners can see which artists their subscription is supporting. Artists can see their royalties grow as listening happens. And when an artist is ready to withdraw, the request goes through a final verification process designed to take no more than 48 hours.

Fans see where their money goes.

Artists see their royalties grow.

Both happen as the listening happens.

01Visible support

YOUR LISTENING. THEIR MUSIC.
VISIBLE IN REAL TIME.

A subscription does not have to disappear into a black box.

The model musen is testing connects each listener’s contribution to the music they actually spend time with.

That means listeners could open their dashboard and see:

Listeners could see

  • The artists they are supporting
  • How their subscription is being attributed
  • How their listening changes that over time

Artists could see

  • Listening as it happens
  • Royalties attributed in real time
  • Their balance growing with their audience

And artists could see the other side of the same relationship:

One system. Two views. The same listening.

02User centric

USER CENTRIC ROYALTIES.
START WITH EACH LISTENER.

User centric royalties begin with a simple idea: what did this person actually listen to?

Instead of treating every listener as part of one indistinguishable pool, musen is researching a time based model where each listener’s eligible contribution can follow their own listening.

If someone spends more of their listening time with an artist, more of that listener’s eligible contribution can be connected to that artist.

  • One listener
  • Their listening time
  • The artists they actually heard
  • Their contribution

It creates a direct line between the fan and the music they choose to spend time with.

03Why time

WHY TIME?

Because radio happens in time. Songs happen in time. Listening happens in time. And the relationship between an artist and a listener grows through time.

A few seconds and four minutes are not the same listening experience. Neither is hearing an artist once and returning to them every day.

musen is researching whether time can become a clearer foundation for future attribution while still respecting rights, eligibility and the fact that time alone does not define artistic value.

  • Time shapes the radio
  • Time records the listening
  • Time can help shape the economy around it
04Attribution

REAL TIME ROYALTIES START WITH
REAL TIME ATTRIBUTION.

In the model musen is testing, royalty attribution happens in real time.

As qualifying listening happens, the artist’s attributed royalties can update with it. There is no need to wait months simply to know what the system has recorded.

01

Listening happens

Qualifying time with the music is recorded as it happens.
02

Attribution updates

Eligible listening is connected to the relevant artists and rights.
03

The artist balance grows

Attributed royalties can update with the listening, not months later.
04

The listener sees who they support

The same relationship is visible from the other side.

The financial withdrawal itself remains a separate step. That is where musen can run the additional checks needed before money leaves the system.

Our target for withdrawal requests

MAXIMUM 48 HOURS.

That review window exists for verification, rights, fraud, accounting and other checks that should happen before settlement.

Real time attribution does not mean careless settlement. It means artists should not have to wait to see what they are earning.

05Both sides

TRANSPARENCY FOR BOTH SIDES.

Usually, the listener knows what they pay. The artist eventually knows what they receive. Everything between those two points can be difficult to see.

We want to test something more transparent.

For listeners

  • See where your subscription is going.
  • See which artists your listening supports.
  • See how your own listening changes the allocation.

For artists

  • See qualifying listening as it happens.
  • See royalties being attributed in real time.
  • See your balance grow.
  • Request a withdrawal when you are ready.

This is not only about changing payments. It is about making the relationship between listening and support visible.

06Project Checkmate

FROM LISTENING TO ROYALTIES.

Project Checkmate is the attribution and accounting system musen is testing alongside the radio, running today as a live parallel experiment.

Its job is to connect what happened in the listening experience to what can eventually become an economic result.

01

Listen

The listener spends time with music.
02

Attribute

Eligible listening is connected to the relevant artists and rights.
03

Show

Listeners and artists can see that attribution reflected in their own dashboards.
04

Account

The system keeps the economic record consistent with the listening evidence and applicable rights.
05

Withdraw

Artists can request settlement, followed by the final verification process before payment.

Real time where visibility matters.

Careful where money moves.

07Discovery

MUSIC DISCOVERY THAT CREATES
REAL RELATIONSHIPS.

musen is personal radio. That means discovery does not have to begin with a search for an artist you already know.

A new song can enter the radio because it belongs in the moment, fits the listener and makes sense in what comes next.

Then something interesting can happen. A listener discovers an artist. They stay. They listen again. And in the economy we are testing, that time can become visible support.

  • Discovery becomes listening
  • Listening becomes a relationship
  • That relationship can have economic value

AI helps shape the radio and connect music with listeners. The artist remains the reason there is something worth hearing.

08The long term radio

INDEPENDENT MUSIC IS PART OF
THE LONG TERM RADIO.

Independent artists are not a temporary catalogue until something bigger arrives. Independent artists are not here only until a larger catalogue arrives.

Creator supplied music is intended to remain a permanent part of musen alongside professionally licensed catalogues.

Creator supplied music

Independent artists. Direct participation. New discovery.

Professionally licensed music

Labels. Distributors. Rights partners. Established catalogues.

Different ways into the system. One personal radio for the listener.

09A clearer connection

FAIRER ROYALTIES BEGIN WITH
A CLEARER CONNECTION.

We cannot promise that every artist will earn more. That would depend on listening, rights, economics and the final model.

What we can test is a system where the relationship is easier to understand:

  • A person listens
  • Their listening is attributed
  • They can see who they support
  • The artist can see the value accumulating

That is what fairer artist royalties mean in the direction musen is working toward. Not an arbitrary fixed payment per stream. A clearer connection between fans, listening time and artists.

10Rights

RIGHTS SHOULD BE JUST AS CLEAR.

A transparent artist and fan economy also needs transparent permissions.

Streaming music does not automatically grant permission to train AI on it. Analysing music does not automatically grant every other use. And having access to a recording does not automatically mean every relevant right is cleared.

musen treats those permissions separately.

  • Access is not permission
  • Streaming is not AI training
  • Artists should know how their music is used

Rights before reach remains part of the system we are building.

11The artist programme

THE ARTIST PROGRAMME IS STARTING SMALL.
THE IDEA IS MUCH BIGGER.

We are testing this with a limited group first.

Real time attribution. Listener transparency. Artist dashboards. Time based user centric royalties, which musen is researching for continuous personal radio. Withdrawal requests with a maximum 48 hour processing target. And a radio system designed to help music find the people who might actually stay and listen.

If that sounds like an artist and fan economy you want to be part of, leave your email.

Artist participation is currently limited. Joining the waitlist does not guarantee admission, airplay, audience reach, royalties or payment.

12Questions

QUESTIONS ARTISTS ASK US

Does musen currently pay artist royalties?

Not as part of the current public musen product. musen is testing a separate artist participation and royalty model with a limited group before wider availability.

Are musen royalties calculated in real time?

In the model we are testing, royalty attribution is real time. Qualifying listening can update the artist's attributed balance as the listening happens. Settlement remains a separate step.

Can artists see their royalties grow in real time?

That is part of the experience we are testing. The artist dashboard is intended to show attribution and royalty balances updating as eligible listening occurs.

Can listeners see where their subscription goes?

Yes, that is a central part of the model we are testing. Listeners are intended to be able to see which artists their listening is supporting and how their eligible contribution is being attributed.

What are user centric royalties?

User centric royalties connect each listener's eligible contribution more directly to the artists that particular listener actually hears. musen is researching a time based version of this idea for continuous personal radio.

Why does musen use listening time?

Because time helps describe the difference between briefly encountering a song and actually spending time listening to it. musen is testing listening time as an important input into attribution, without treating duration as a measure of artistic quality.

Are withdrawals instant?

No. Attribution can happen in real time, but money leaving the system goes through additional checks. The model we are testing targets processing withdrawal requests within a maximum of 48 hours.

Why is there a 48 hour withdrawal window?

It gives musen time to run the additional verification, rights, accounting and fraud checks needed before settlement. The aim is fast settlement without removing the controls that make the accounting trustworthy.

Can independent artists upload music to musen?

Not publicly yet. Artist participation is currently a closed test. Join the artist waitlist if you want to hear from us as it expands.

Will joining guarantee airplay?

No. Participation does not guarantee that a particular track will be selected or how often it will be heard.

Does musen use AI generated music?

The current public musen radio uses existing music recordings. musen uses AI to shape the radio experience, not to generate the songs currently being played.

Does musen train AI on artist music?

Not automatically. Permission to stream or analyse music does not automatically include permission to use that music for AI training.

What is Project Checkmate?

Project Checkmate is musen's attribution and accounting system for exploring this artist and fan economy. It connects listening evidence, rights, attribution, accounting and eventual settlement while keeping those stages distinct. It is not currently a live artist payout system.
